A lost art of sewing?

There are still alot of things I want to learn in this life time.

How to knit and sew are a couple of things. My mother-in-law

knits beautifully but she says she can't teach me because I'm left handed! I'm still

determined it can be done!

Starting next week Melissa of Pink Satin Sashes

(formerly of Cranberry Cottage) will be giving me sewing lessons! I can't wait to

learn how to properly use my sewing machine. There is so much toile material

calling out to me!

Another form of sewing I really want to learn that is quite an art is shown

here on this gorgeous piece of antique linen...

This piece of linen material is just incredible to touch. Thick and so luxurious!

On all corners of the fabric is a stencil just waiting to be sewn. Someone had

started a small section of it. Whoever started this piece was doing a beautiful job.

Can you see the thickness of the thread and the type of stitch that was used?

I have no idea how to do this and unfortunately I don't know of anyone who does.

There must be someone out there who knows how to do this type of stitch.

Until I find a way to have this piece finished I will safely store it away!

  1. It is so thick and wonderful to feel, almost silky. Thank you Pamela I had a good day.

  2. It looks lovely, Pamela. I think it's satin stitch, maybe padded satin stitch.

My daughter is left handed and her mother-in-law is teaching her how to knit. It seems to be working quite well.

  3. Hi Pamela, That is a beautiful piece of linen, I hope you can find out how to do it so you can finish it off. I'm left handed and can knit. Not sure if I knit lefthanded or not!

  4. I just purchased a book called "left handed embroiderer's companion" by Yvette Stanton. I ordered it through Amazon.com - it looks amazing. There are more embroidery stitches than I ever knew.

As I mentioned I'm left handed and decided to crochet right handed when I took it up again in 2008. It seems to be working out ok. I've made quite a few things and don't have to fuss with reversing patterns.

I didn't realize that there is a left handed or right handed way to knitting. I took a class in knitting so many years ago I just don't remember but it seems to me if you hold a needle in each hand why not just do it as a right handed would.

There are so many great tutorials/videos on Youtube that you should be able to teach yourself how to do any craft. Any of it just takes practice. Try it - you could finish that beautiful piece of embroidery you have.

  7. Oh, I am so excited for you, to learn to sew with the help of a friend makes it so much more fun. This makes me remember helping my girlfriend sew a skirt for her bathroom sink, lots of giggling involved. Have fun you two.

  8. Oh you will have fun sewing! I love to sew-especially when I have the time to do it. I believe that stitch is simply a satin stitch...and one of the easiest ones to do. However, the person that did this was particuarly talented..as I don't see much variation in her stitches at all. Look at the back...and if it is too "perfect" it was probably done as a satin stitch on a machine. Whatever it is-it is a beautiful piece..and I love the fabric it's on. If that was done by hand you are looking at hours and hours of work for what was done so far.

I don't knit either and I wish I did! Maybe when I get old....hahahaha...oh-wait...I AM old! Hugs- Diana

  9. sewing! I ALWAYS sucked at sewing! What a shame too, because look at some of the beautiful examples you provided of what one can do. I still need help with 'bobbin threading 101' It completely confounds me.

  10. Never learned to knit, but I sure could teach you to quilt! Oh, that wasn't on your list. Oh well. If you ever want to learn, crazy quilting is fab fun. All those embroidery stitches and beads and such.

  11. My grandmother taught me how to cross stitch, candlewick, crochet and knit, but I never learned more than the absolute basics when it came to sewing. That is on my things to learn list...

I cannot wait to hear about your progress in learning how to sew. The linen pieces you pictured are gorgeous and I hope you can figure out how to finish them.

  12. Hi Pamela, weird...I commented on this post yesterday, but it didn't show up, so here I go again! I love that satin stitch, and there are some fancy sewing machines out there that can do that. I hope you get the machine you want soon. Now you've inspired me to try some more of my stitches on my machine. Have a great weekend. :-)

  13. I recognize that stitch on the linen piece - my neighbour has it on her machine. for appliques and stuff too. I am actually purchasing knitting needles today and my mother in law is going to teach my daughter. I though it was a great way to spend time together and visit. this is my inspiration:

  17. Oh Pamela! If we lived closer, we could take some sewing classes together. I started quilting in 2007 with a friend and made a quilt for our living room and then 2 more quilts..one for my mom and one for my dad. They are almost finished. I put them away for the summer, and I haven't done too much with them since...which is terrible I know. I agree with you...knitting and sewing are such wonderful hobbies. Angie xo

  18. When I read this certain blog...I think of you because this scrapbooker/artist/blogger loves all things Victorian and pretty just like you. You should go visit her blog and scroll down into her archives and see some of her little handsewn projects and decor. All so beautiful!!
